Excluding places in Southern California, what are some of the best places to live in border states?

I currently live in North Carolina, and are thinking about moving to either Texas, Arizona, or New Mexico. For those who live in those areas, what are the best places to relocate, considering living expenses, jobs, safety, amenities, etc.? Consider that we are a couple with a 1 year old little girl. I cross out Southern California. It's nice, but I've been there, and it's way too expensive.

Unless you like Desert rule out west texas, almost all of NM and Almost all of southern AZ

I have family in Prescott AZ. It is a historical town in Northern Az Alot like Colorado(high Country, lots of trees, all four seasons)
Cost of living is about half of what it is in So Cal, and you are about 2-3 hours from Phoenix, vegas, Skiing etc

I alo would Suggest looking into Seattle area (Lots of job available, Cost of living about 70% of So Cal's)
